FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How does Soprano ICE Platinum work?
Soprano Platinum technology
Soprano’s exclusive 3D technology combines 3 wavelengths:
- ALEX 755nm
- Diode 808nm
- YAG 1064nm
Combining these 3 wavelengths means the applicator can simultaneously target 3 different tissue depths. Combining the absorption and penetration of each wavelength means that every customer enjoys unrivaled results – no matter which skin tone or which body part(s) they are targeting.
A high repetition rate of short pulses is delivered deep into the dermis, achieving high average power and therapeutically effective heat build-up. The sweeping In-motion technique of moving the applicator repeatedly over the treatment area ensures full coverage while the Platinum ICE super cooling technology cools the skin surface – preventing discomfort and side effects and allowing for virtually painless yet highly effective hair removal.
Do I need to have a consultation?
A consultation and patch test as mandatory prior to treatment. This is a requirement of our special treatments license and our insurance and is there to ensure you are fully informed about the treatment and will not have an adverse reaction to treatment. The patch test is also when we will work out the best laser settings to use for you to get the best possible results and ensure the treatment is safe and comfortable.
What is a patch test?
A patch test involves trying out the laser on a small patch of each different body area you are interested in treating. It is necessary to shave a patch of each area to be treated, roughly the size of the palm of your hand around 8 hours prior to the patch test. This provides a smooth area to apply the laser and also 8 hours is sufficient time for your skin to calm down after shaving while not being so long a time that hair is starting to re-grow.
Is a patch test necessary?
A patch test is necessary and essential prior to any laser treatment to ensure the treatment will be safe, comfortable, and effective.
Can you use laser hair removal on dark skin?
Laser hair removal can be used on dark skin. The Soprano Ice Platinum is the market-leading system for treating darker skin types safely and effectively.
What does Soprano ICE Platinum feel like?
Soprano ICE Titanium often feels like a gentle warming sensation. Some patients may experience mild pins and needles sensation, but this is rare.
Because the temperature remains controlled and constant, patients enjoy a cool, comfortable & virtually pain-free experience throughout the session.
What to expect after Laser Treatment?
After treatment you may experience mild redness or slight sensitivity. Aloe Vera gel is excellent to calm and soothe the skin and works well straight from the fridge. For any areas treated that are exposed to sunlight, you should protect your skin with a factor 30-50 SPF sunscreen.
After the laser treatment avoid heat such as hot baths or showers, saunas, and steam rooms. Avoid vigorous exercise and swimming as the chemicals in the water may cause irritation. Our team is always available to provide continuing advice and support even after your final session is complete
Who can be treated?
The Soprano Ice Platinum is suitable to treat all skin types from 1-6 on the Fitzpatrick scale and is also suitable and safe to treat tanned skin.
- We can only treat clients aged 18 or over.
- Clients taking Accutane or similar anti-acne medications or who have been taking Accutane during the past 6-12 months cannot be treated.
- Clients who are on regular daily antibiotics cannot be treated. A 2-week wait after completing a course of antibiotics is necessary.
- Anyone who is pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant cannot be treated.
- Anyone who is sunburned has peeling skin, has had significant sun exposure less than 1 week prior to treatment cannot be treated.
- Anyone with a history of cold sores to the treatment area should start taking an anti-viral medication for 3 days before and after treatment.
- Clients with light-sensitive epilepsy, vitiligo, type 1 diabetes, a history of keloid scarring, or lupus cannot be treated.
- Clients currently taking any medication or herbal supplement that may cause photo-sensitivity – it is necessary to obtain a doctor’s note in this case before commencing treatment.
Is Soprano Platinum safe?
The Soprano Ice Platinum system is one of the safest lasers on the market. Rather than delivering all the laser energy in shots such as with traditional laser systems, the applicator is passed back and forth over the area to be treated so that the energy and warmth build up over a few seconds.
This gives you a measure of control over the heat you experience.
How many treatments will I need?
Laser hair removal will only treat the hair in the Anagen phase of growth, roughly 10-15% of the hair in any particular area will be at this phase at any time. Each treatment, 4-8 weeks apart will treat different hairs at this stage of their life cycle so you should see a roughly 10-15% reduction in hair per treatment. Most people will go for 6 to 8 treatments per area.
How many treatments will I need?
Should I shave before my Laser Treatment?
It is necessary to shave any area prior to laser treatment to ensure the session is safe and effective. The optimal time to shave is around 8 hours before your appointment time. This allows your skin time to calm down and any redness to fade while still leaving a smooth surface for the laser to treat.
If the hair has not been shaved, the laser will mainly heat up the hair outside the skin rather than the root structures as required. This will not be comfortable, presents an increased risk of side effects, and will also result in the treatment being ineffective or less effective. Anyone arriving for a laser treatment unshaven will not be able to receive treatment. Therefore, we are unable to treat any area that has not been smoothly shaved prior to treatment.
We offer men’s shaving for the back and shoulder area for a small charge per visit.
Are credit options available?
Credit options are available. Rather than a credit agreement and charging interest we operate a simple installments payment plan.
What is the difference between laser hair removal and electrolysis?
The main differences between laser hair removal and electrolysis are speed and pain level. The laser can be used to treat large areas quickly and depending on the type of laser used can be virtually pain-free. Electrolysis works by treating individual hairs and passing an electric current down each hair which can be incredibly time-consuming and quite painful. It can be a good option for treating small areas of white hair.
Are there any side effects to laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal when performed correctly is safe and has few or no side effects. A patch test will be administered prior to the first treatment and we pre-screen you for any new medications or medical conditions that may increase the risk of side effects prior to each appointment. Some redness or itching is possible after treatment and you may be more susceptible to the sun (tanning, sunburn, or pigmentation) so it is important to protect your skin after treatment. As Soprano lasers work by gradually heating the area to be treated, more serious side effects are extremely rare. At any point, if you are feeling too hot you can halt the treatment avoiding any skin damage such as soreness or a blister. With traditional shots which work with single high-intensity shots, skin damage can be more likely, particularly if numbing cream is used.
Is laser hair removal effective on darker skin types?
Laser hair removal is effective on darker skin types. Soprano Ice Platinum and Soprano Titanium are the market-leading and best-known systems for treating darker skin types safely and effectively.
What areas of the body can you laser?
You can perform laser hair removal on almost any body area. We do not treat the palms of the hands or the soles of the feet as hair will not grow there. Eyes must be protected during treatment so we cannot treat within the eye socket. We only advise treating areas that have terminal hair (thicker darker hair) and you should avoid areas that only have very fine baby hair which will not be dense enough to be affected by the laser.
How many sessions will I need?
A minimum of 6 sessions, correctly spaced is recommended for a good result. Typically, a hair reduction of around 60-90% can be achieved for clients that respond well to treatment from 6 sessions. Areas such as the face and the bikini area tend to be more resistant to treatment and more sessions are usually required to get a good result. A small percentage of clients are more resistant to treatment and will require more sessions to reach that level of reduction. Everyone is different with different hair color, skin color, hormones, genetics, and general resistance to the treatment.
Will my laser hair removal become less painful after my first treatment?
As you progress through your course and you have less hair you will normally feel less and less heat and tingling sensation for the simple reason that there is less hair there to heat up!
How long will I have to wait between sessions?
Facial hair and body hair grow at different speeds. It is recommended to come every 4 weeks for face sessions for the first 4 treatments and then spaced every 4-6 weeks thereafter with a longer gap between treatments if hair growth has slowed down. When treating body areas, it is recommended to come every 6 weeks for the first 4 treatments and then spaced every 6-8 weeks thereafter with a longer gap between treatments if hair growth has slowed down.
What kind of aftercare treatment will I need?
- Aftercare is simple. Keep the area cool, aloe vera gel is recommended and works even more effectively when stored in the fridge.
- Avoid sun exposure to reduce the chance of hyperpigmentation. Use sunscreen SPF 30 or greater at all times throughout the course of treatment on any areas exposed to daylight. We stock an Aloe Vera Factor 50 sunscreen which is ideal for use during laser treatment.
- Avoid sun exposure, saunas, steam rooms, vigorous exercise, hot baths, or showers, and treat the skin gently, as if you had sunburn, for the first 48 hours after treatment.
Will six sessions of laser hair removal be enough?
For many patients, six treatments get the results they are looking for. Typically a hair reduction of 60-90% can be achieved by those who respond well to treatment. A small proportion is more resistant to treatment and areas such as the face and bikini area tend to be more resistant for all patients. Typically the more treatments you do, the more hair reduction is achieved.
Can I have laser hair removal treatment over my tattoo?
You cannot have laser hair removal over or close to any tattoos or semi-permanent make-up. The tattoo will blister and burn instantly if the laser passes over it during treatment. We cover all tattoos with gauze and masking tape and the area during treatments.
How long will laser hair removal last?

Is laser hair removal suitable with PCOS?
Laser hair removal is suitable with PCOS. One of the symptoms of PCOS is increased hair growth which can occur all over the body. Laser hair removal is an excellent choice in reducing this hair. PCOS will constantly be trying to undo the effects of the laser treatment so more regular top-ups may be required after a course is complete.
Is laser hair removal suitable when breastfeeding?
Laser hair removal is safe during breastfeeding, however, we recommend waiting until breastfeeding is completed before having a laser hair removal treatment. It is not possible to have laser hair removal during pregnancy. There are hormonal changes that occur that can result in increased or reduced hair growth during pregnancy, this may change after birth and may change again after breastfeeding is completed.
I am photosensitive – is laser hair removal a safe option?
Photosensitivity is an increased reaction to light and heat. If you are experiencing photosensitivity due to a medical condition or a medication you will not be able to have laser hair removal. The treatment will be far riskier and is more likely to damage your skin.
How long should I go in between laser hair removal appointments?
Facial hair and body hair grow at different speeds. It is recommended to come every 4 weeks for face sessions for the first 4 treatments and then spaced every 4-6 weeks thereafter with a longer gap between treatments if hair growth has slowed down. When treating body areas, it is recommended to come every 6 weeks for the first 4 treatments and then spaced every 6-8 weeks thereafter with a longer gap between treatments if hair growth has slowed down.
Can I have laser hair removal if I am on certain medications?
You can have laser hair removal while taking medications in many cases. If you are taking a medication that has the potential to cause the side effect photosensitivity (an increased reaction to light and heat), further checks are necessary prior to treatment. In order to be able to treat you, the protocol we are required to follow by our laser licensing authorities and our insurers is to have you obtain a doctor’s note stating that the chance of these medications causing photosensitivity is low and you are not exhibiting any symptoms of this side effect. We can then perform the patch test and book from there if there are no issues.
Do you offer numbing for laser hair removal?
We do not offer numbing cream prior to a laser hair removal treatment. It is not necessary with a Soprano laser treatment and it can actually make a treatment unsafe! During a Soprano laser treatment, the therapist will be checking with you constantly to ensure the heat felt is comfortable. The use of numbing cream would prevent you from feeling the heat generated which could potentially lead to burns.
