Micro Needling and Melasma
Melasma is a common skin pigment disorder of women between the ages of 20 and 50. Causes of melasma include sun, ultraviolet exposure, pregnancy, oral contraceptives, and certain drugs.
Clinically, melasma is characterized by irregularly shaped hyperpigmented areas of a beige or brown color. These areas usually occur on areas of the face exposed to sun, for example, the upper lip, cheeks, and forehead.
Therapies for melasma consist of topical application of hypopigmenting agents. These agents include hydroquinone, retinoic acid and azelaic acid. Laser resurfacing has been used in the past, but side effects include persistent erythema, hypo / hyper pigmentation, and hypertrophic scarring. Dermal needling (or fractional dermabrasion) when used with topical depigmenting serum has been shown to significantly improve appearance.

How does Micro Needling work?
The premise is simple – The Micro Needling creates micro point punctures in the skin- the majority of which are simply pushing your open pores temporarily. This is perceived by the body as damage, which stimulates the release of growth factors that trigger the production of collagen and elastin. Your skin reacts to any injury by initiating the healing process. Your skin normally assumes that scars, stretch marks and wrinkles are repaired, but with the Derma Pen micro needling treatments, the skin is tricked into repairing the skin evenly. The process of micro needling skin remodeling can go on for months after each Derma Pen treatment. Results can be seen within a week or even a few days. Your skin naturally heals itself within 45 days, so with a little micro needling stimulation, dramatic changes can be seen very quickly. Micro Needling works best when done in a series of treatments.
Full-face treatments take about an hour. After your face is numbed, the sterile single-use micro-needle is applied to the face, leaving behind tiny pinholes, which trigger a cascade of reactions, which stimulate regenerative healing. You can expect redness following treatment, which will resolve within a few days. During the healing process, skin cells release growth signals to stem cells. New fibroblasts rush in. New collagen fibers thicken the skin, filling in depressed scars, forming a new, healthy collagen layer (collagenesis) in the treated area. How deep does the Microneedling Therapy go?
From very superficial penetration to deep dermal penetration, the professional applications have a wide range of potential to improve and correct skin problems without the use of lasers. Penetration ranges begin at cosmetic depth of 0.25mm up to 2.0mm.
- Light penetration opens the skin long enough for the introduction of specific treatment serums. Since most product molecules are too large to cross the skin barrier, they can only be minimally effective. Micro Needling opens the skin for a few minutes and this allows a huge increase of product penetration – your product ingredients can then reach beneath the surface where they will do the most good. Treatment serums can be selected for skin lightening, hydration, texture and pore tightening.
